Welcome Tigers and Families,
This is our class blog. Here you will find important dates and up coming events. You will also be able to see what your child is working on in class.
Reading - We will be taking some reading assessments and I will be listening to the children read over the next week to note any gains or losses they may have had over the summer. We will start our reading groups this week and move into our normal schedule.
Writing - Last week we set up our writing journals and began some free choice writing. We also discussed using our senses to describe things. The students began a descriptive writing on a favorite place. Over the next few week we will expand on the ideas they have started writing and learn to be more descriptive.
Spelling - The students received their first list on Friday. We will be working with the words in class and I recommend they review them each night. There will be a spelling test next Friday.
Math - Last week we took a County pretest and a Ch1 &2 pretest. This week we will begin looking at place value. Students will be writing & identifying numbers in standard form (3,467), expanded notation (3,000+400+60+7), and word form. We will work our way up to the 10,000's place.
Science - Last week we started looking at rocks and minerals. We learned that rocks are made of minerals and have properties that identify them. We also began to look at the 3 types of rocks and how they are formed. This week we will be working on Social Studies.
Social Studies - This week we will begin our unit on Ancient Greece. We will learn to locate it on a map, discuss the roots of; architectural styles that America uses, the OOlympics, and democracy. We will come back to Greece in a few weeks to go deeper in to their direct democracy and our representative democracy and how the two are smiler and different.
Technology - This week we met our new technology teacher and learned to use Paint. We will visit the lab every other week for lessons.
Media Center - We will have our first trip this Tuesday.
I feel so lucky to have such a great class and expect this to be a great year!
