It's Happening in 5th Grade!

Frog Welcome to 5th Grade! We are going to have a wonderful year. Please make sure that you check our blog on a regular basis for homework assignments, school news, and parent information.

Your job is to come to Murdock prepared to learn. This includes completing all homework assignments, studying for tests, getting a good night's sleep, eating a healthy breakfast and packing all your necessary supplies each night. Remember, it is your responsibility as a student to do all of these things.

Valentine's Day

Valentine's Day will be celebrated on February 14th as it is a school day.  Each child will receive a white bag to decorate at home (remember to include a name so we can identify the owner!).  Valentines will then be delivered to the bags by the other students.  Each student should bring in their decorated bag and Valentines for each student in class on the 14th.  Each Valentine should be the same for everyone (no special best friend gifts) and can only be delivered to the students in this class, not other classes. A class list will be provided for each student.

Immigration Day is coming!

Parents,

This year the 5th graders are going to participate in a simulation of the experience that an immigrant would have had arriving at Ellis Island at the turn of the century. Your child will be given the identity of either an immigrant arriving at Ellis Island in 1900 or an Ellis Island processor who came to America as an immigrant 20 years earlier.  In order to make the simulation a productive and enjoyable learning experience for all, we are asking that for homework your child should work with you to research and learn about where his/her identity came from, why he/she emigrated, about his/her personal beliefs, and personality.  The students may also want to try to learn a few words in the immigrant's native language!

On Friday, December 16th, the students will participate in the simulation of arriving and going through Ellis Island.  Each child will be given a handbook describing this day and his or her individual responsibilities that you may also want to read.  Each immigrant will have a checklist that he or she will carry through Ellis Island and is filled out at each check point by a processor.  Who will earn enough points to remain in the New World?  Who will have to return to their homeland? We will find out on the 16th.  On that day, students will be expected to dress as their immigrant or processor role.  Costumes/props should be brought to school in a bag, and the students will change after specials. Immigrants should also bring their name tag, and processors should bring their desk plate.  Instructions on how to make these will be given in class.  We are also asking that students bring in a food item from their role's country of origin.  This should be an hors d'oeuvre type of food that can be brought to school in the morning, kept in the classroom, and served easily after lunch.  The food is not a requirement, but the more people who participate, the bigger the feast!

Thank you for your help in making this learning activity a success. Please note: This is a student activity in a small area of the school, therefore parents cannot attend.

5th End of the Year Activities

Monday, May 23rd is Fifth Grade’s Picnic: Students should wear class T-shirts, shorts, and tennis shoes. Pease apply sunscreen at home.  Students may also bring in a water bottle, towel to sit on, and their yearbook to be signed.  A pizza lunch will now be served, so students do not need to bring a sack lunch.

Tuesday, May 24th is The 5th Grade Read In and Game Day:  Literaure and reading will be celebrated all day.  Students may bring in pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, snacks, and soft drinks.   This is a lot of fun, so please ensure your child comes to school with everything he/she will need for a fun time reading.  For the second half of the day students will participate in Game Day.  Students are encouraged to bring in cards or board games to play with their friends.  Students are responsible for any items brought into school for this activity.  Dismissal is at 1:30PM.

Wednesday, May 25th is the LAST DAY OF SCHOOL, and  THE CELEBRATION FOR 5th GRADE STUDENTS.  Students should arrive at school with the item they are bringing for the brunch.  Remember, containers and serving utensils need to be disposable.  The student brunch will be from 9-10AM. Parents should arrive and go directly to the covered play area at 10:15AM. Please take traffic and parking into consideration as you plan your arrival time. If the parking lot is full, parents are asked to park on Village Drive rather than Murdock Road.  (Pass Murdock on the left and it is the next road on the right). Two guests per student are invited. No more guests are permitted due to space restrictions. Students and guests should wear dress clothes. There will be sign in sheets on the covered play area, so parents do not need to go to the front office.  Parents will then be escorted to classroom to view the 5th Grade DVD.  The last activity of the day will be the FIFTH GRADE FINAL WALK THROUGH THE BUILDING.  During this time the students and parents will take  a parting walk through the Murdock building, while all the younger classes and teachers line the hallways to say good-bye and good luck to our departing fifth graders.  This is the fifth graders’ last walk through Murdock as students before they depart to middle school.  After the final walk, students leave with their parents.  This should be about 11:30AM.  Please note that the final walk should continue to move without stopping in order for all fifth graders and parents to be off campus prior to the buses’ early arrival.

Thank you for your help and encouragement,  not only during the last week, but throughout the year.  Have a great summer.
