3rd Nine Weeks

Kindergarten

Snowy K This quarter we experienced "Snow Days"!  On January 8th & Snow Day 08-099th, it "snowed" in the Science Lab!  No, unfortunately it wasn't real snow, we used a polymer like the ones found in diapers.  But please don't go ripping up diapers; this is formulated a little differently so it will fluff up just like snow!  With all this white fun, we learned math concepts like capacity, mass, and ordering as well as using our senses to compare both wet and dry snow for language arts and writing.  We even learned a few "cool" facts about snow - like the biggest snowflake size - almost as big as a pizza!  We had a Arctic Blast!

Dr suess hatMarch 2nd is a very special day; its Dr. Suess' Birthday!  Of course we will celebrate with all kinds of "ooy-gooey" fun!  We explored the properties of Ooblek, Gak, and Flubber.  With each substance we tried to stretch it, break it, bounce it, form it into a ball, melt it, make a fossil imprint, lift the ink off of newspaper, and try to float or sink some toys!  Whew!  It is messy - it is great learning fun - it's science!

1st Grade

Cricket jumping

Its Lights, camera, Shadows for 1st grade!  We will be learning about sources of light as well as a whole bunch of neat things with shadows!  We will make shadow shapes, watch them changes size, shape, and placement as see if we can predict where an object is based on its shadow footprint.  We will even watch our own shadows dance across the pavement and discover why our shadows can move on their own.  We may even get to explore how an ancient "good luck charm" responds to light!  Be sure to ask about it!

2nd Grade

Stars and moon in windowIn Second grade we will be exploring the night sky!  We will discover the reason for the seasons (revolution and the axis), what makes day & night (rotation), and all about constellations.  We will also explore the phases of the moon in the most delicious of ways!  Many of our activities will take us inside our very own Star Lab where we can view the winter night sky.  And making our own star finders will help us to locate the constellations we will be learning about.

Horseshoe_magnet_magnetic_rays_md_clr3rd grade

Third grade has been learning all about the habitats of Georgia, adaptation, sucession, and our Eating cerealendangered species.  Each class will aslo visit the Wright Center to gets some hands on time with nature!

Then we will be exploring magnets in the lab!  We will learn about repulsion and attraction as well as which things are magnetic using some things you may never have thought of!  Did you know that we eat metal everyday?  Ask your kids where you'll find it!  We are making magnets, exploring what has magnetic properties and what is not attracted to magnets all while using our science term "hypothesize".  We will also find, explore and draw the magnetic field of a magnet, find the poles on different shaped magnets, discover if a magnetic field can go through objects, and what happens if you break a magnet in half!  We will also learn a little about how magnets are used in technology around us every day!

4th gradeMoon and telescope

We are also learning about the universe and the objects we see in the sky.  We will learn what stars are made from, the trememndous distance between them, their enormous numbers and how their light helps us to look backwards in time.  As a matter of fact, the light from our next closest star is almost as old as the students!  It takes 5 years for that light to reach Earth; isn't that incredible!  We will also investigate the phases of the moon, rotation, revolution, the seasons, and how technology is used to study and explore our universe.  They will also have plenty of opportunity to investigate inside the star lab when we make "film canister" constellation finders!

Moon orbiting earth

5th grade

In fifth grade its all about Electricity!  We will learn what electricity is, all about static electricity, open & closed circuits, series & parallel circuits, conductors & insulators, and electromagnets!  Whew!  Now they aren't ready to rewire the basement, but they can probably tell you why the lights go out on the christmas tree!Edison lightbulb

2nd Nine Weeks

Spring_move_md_clr_4   Kindergarten:

We will be exploring Gravity & Motion on Thursday and Friday, November 13th and 14th.  We will need 2-3 parent volunteers for each class when they come down to the lab to investigate these forces!  It is EASY & FUN - no science knowledeg is required; just patience and a smile!  Please email me if you are interested.  The schedule for the classes is coming soon. deborah.kauffman@cobbk12.org

First Grade:Horseshoe_magnet_magnetic_rays_md_2

In first grade, we will be investigating Magnets & Sound. The students will come to the lab for a full hands on investigation into many of the neat things that magnets can do!  We will learn about permanent and temporary magnets with electromagnets, repelling and attracting forces as we "bounce" magnets, cow magnets and the magnetic field, what is magnetic, what blocks magnetism, where north & south are on different shaped magnets, what magnets do to compasses, and when magnets "sing"!  Whew!  Be sure to ask them about the aurora borealis or the northern lights!

Then we move on to sound.......Tuning_fork

In our sound unit we have learned all about the ingredients needed to make a sound, atoms or particles, energy, and vibrations!  We felt vibrations in our throats, balloons, and tuning forks.  We explored what makes a high or low pitch and what can make sound louder.  We discovered that sound can go through solid, liquid and gas and even discussed whether you would hear a spaceship explode in space!  Are the sounds on Star Wars accurate or not; would you hear it?  Ask your student!  Then ask them what happens when you touch the tines of a tuning fork to the surface of water!  I can still hear the squeals of delight!

Second Grade: Sun_drinking_energy_drink_md_clr_2

In second grade, we will be investigating Energy!  We will learn what energy is, that energy can come in the form of heat, light, and motion.  We will also investigate how light from our sun heats the Earth, that any motion results in heat energy, and how energy cannot be created or destroyed.  So much learning & so much FUN!

Third Grade:

Sediment_encasing_gold_shine_md_clrIn Third Grade we are exploring Fossils, Soils, Habitats & Organisms!  We are making soil percolators to investigate how particle size effects how water moves through the soil and how understanding these differences is important for choosing sites for construction of ponds, bridges, homes, and roads.  We will also be making imprint & mold fossils using coffee ground, sand and flour!  Then we will moving on to Habitats & Organisms....

Rollercoaster_going_round_md_clr Fourth Grade:

We are investigating Force & Motion! To demonstrate Potential and Kinetic energy we will be making Roller Coasters!  We will also be learning about Simple Machines as we construct the three classes of levers and "fling" some marshmallows!  Too much Fun!Female_scientist_demonstrate_physic

We are also studying sound!  Much of this unit is more in depth review of 1st grade lessons, with what causes sound, pitch and volume, sound travelling through the three phases of matter, and where the vibrations actually are.  Then we had a little American Idol contest with our palm pipes; and let me just say they made the songs their own!  Now ask your student, "If a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?"

Fallen_tree

Fifth Grade:

Dna_using_microscope_md_clr

In Fifth Grade we will be examining Microorganisms and Cells.  We will learn about the effectiveness of washing our hands with water, soap, and hand sanitizer.  Then we will use a special lotion that will reveal the micobes that we "missed"  as they glow under UV light; how cool!  We will learn about the parts of a microscope and how to use the compound microscope to investigate pond water from my backyard.  We will also be learning the differences in Plant and Animal cells and finally we will be isolating strawberry DNA as wearable science!  Way Cool!Frog_in_beaker_md_clr
