It was wonderful seeing and/or meeting all of you this week at conferences.
I just want to reiterate that I am here for you and the well-being of your children. Please do not hesitate to communicate with me immediately if you need anything, or if there is any way that I can be of assistance to your child.
Thanks to Mrs. Tanner for reading scary stories and Mrs. Garrett for coming in on Friday and making pumpkin bread with the class. What a treat! I can't wait to eat it Monday morning!
This week: Healthy Choices Week
Monday is PUMPKIN DAY!!! I promised the children 10 tickets for wearing orange and an additional 10 if you are daring enough to come in crazy hair. I want to make this day fun for all! All subjects will be centered around pumpkins and pumpkin like activities. We will also be having our pumpkin bread in the AM and some cupcakes in the PM. "You can't trick me because I am drug free" day.
Tuesday - November already....where does the time go? Eat fruit at lunch and a veggie at dinner day.
Wednesday - computer lab lesson with Mr. Tener and Guidance lesson with Mrs. Haskett. Keep a water bottle at school day. (Your child should always have a water bottle in my class anyway)
Thursday - Share a joke with your class and family day.
Friday - 5 minutes of extra recess day!!!!!
Curriculum Briefings:
Math: Concluded this installment of time and elapsed time. Very abstract for the students, we will return to it again this year, so if they are not solid with this skill yet, they will have the opportunity to work on it again this year. We began multiplication and will work on memorizing those facts. Te whole class already knew the zero property (multiplying by zero = zero) and the identity property (multiplying by 1 = the number you are multiplying by) Ask your child about these properties.
Since they are able to skip count by 2's, 5's, and 10's easily, they were asked to study their 2's, 5's, and 10's this weekend. This should come fairly easy to most of the class. They are being rewarded with tickets for memorization of the facts.
ELA - Homophones, homophones and more homophones. Since this is a reading skill as well as spelling, I am not going to start another sort this week. We will continue to add homophones to our personal homophone dictionaries and I will give a sentence based assessment on the first 10 words in the sort on Friday. I will give a sentence and they will have to choose the correct form of the word to use. Example: I will (by, bye, buy) a new car.
Reading - Reading groups will begin again after a short hiatus due to testing and early release. The new books will focus on really analyzing the elements of the story and the author's way of writing.
Writing - We will begin to create our own stories and add to them daily until the Thanksgiving break. The goal is to have a complete published story before we leave for Thanksgiving. If you want to start brainstorming with your child at home, please do so. Talk about the characters (not too many, but at least two) The setting, where and when the story takes place. The plot - beginning, middle and end. The main character needs to have a problem to solve by the end of the story. Remember, we will be doing this slowly over several weeks. Some at home brainstorming and discussion of ideas will help the in school process. Thanks!
Social Studies: Paul Revere is our biography of focus. We are going to learn about how his patriotism led to our independence. The students must also be able to identify where Boston is on a map of the US as well as the Appalachian and Rocky mountain ranges.
