April 2011

Our unit stories have been about the season of spring and all the wonderful things associated with spring.  We have been busy bees!  We are learning about bugs, bunnies, flowers, and the weather.  We have made some really cool art projects about caterpillars changing to butterflies.  Look for them to some home soon!  Right now we are displaying them in the hall so everyone can see our work.

In cooking, we made caterpillars out of m&m's and colored Easter eggs.  The treats were so good, we ate them.  That's why you didn't get to see them, sorry :-]

In addition to having things to do, we have places to go this spring.  Our CBI's will be going to Pike's Nursery on April 21st and to Target on May 12th.  Our May CBI is earlier than usual because of school ending.

Thanks to Priscilla Upshaw, our annual family picnic will continue this year.  The planned date is Friday, May 20.  An invitation will be in your child's communication book soon.  Look for it!

ESY (Extended School Year) runs June 13th-30th and July11th-28th, with the week of the 4th of July off.  Ms. Gail will be teaching it in the Harris Hares' classroom at Murdock.

We always need snacks, of course.  We also need of clorox wipes and baby wipes if you would like to donate.

Happy Spring!

We are winding down the school year.  The themes for the spring are gardens, animals, moms, sea life.

Happy Mother's Day

 This Friday, your child will be bringing home a couple of gifts for Mom.  One is a small box filled with very special things.  We made it based on a book titled,

A Present for Mom by Vivian French.  A summary is printed below:

PreSchool-Grade 2-This charming Mother's Day story depicts family togetherness and love in a single-parent household. Stanley, the youngest of four kittens, can't decide on a gift for his mother. Stumped, he asks each of his siblings what they are giving. His brother says he will give their mother flowers. "`Good idea,' said Stanley" and he rushes off to pick some flowers from the garden. But "by the time he got back inside, all the petals had fallen off." Stanley then goes on to ask his two older sisters for advice but comes up with no ideas. Troubled, the kitten tosses and turns all night, worrying about what to do. The next morning, his siblings gather in Stanley's room to offer last-minute advice, triggering an idea for the perfect present. The cartoon illustrations, done in watercolor, gouache, and pencil, dominate the book, showing the dejected kitten as his ears droop, whiskers quiver, and tail drags with each failed effort to produce a gift. One very nice touch is the progression of family photos on the endpapers and title pages. The bright colors and expressive characters combined with the heartwarming story make this a noteworthy addition to picture-book collections. Children will identify with Stanley, his quest, and his ultimate triumph.

On Tuesday, April 26 we went to the zoo with the entire kindergarten class.  It was a beautiful day and we had a lot of fun.

Summer School

ESY this summer is right here at Murdock! Dates and hours for summer school are:

June 13th through June 30th  and

July 11th through July 28th

The school day will be from 9:00-12:00, Monday-Thursday.

Please note: There is no school the week of the 4th of July.

Murdock's 2nd Annual Boosterthon!

MESF is having the Boosterthon again this year to raise funds for our school!  The money that Murdock receives will help provide the salary for our science teacher, Ms. Kauffman and some equipment for our classrooms.  MESF will even pay for a field trip for us this year!  Please get as many pledges as you can for your student so Murdock can have these benefits and more!

Next week we have CBI on October 21st.  We will be going to check out the new Big Lots! location on Canton Highway.

 

FIELD TRIP

On November 4th, Harris Hares will be joining the kindergarten classrooms on a field trip to the Cherokee Outdoor YMCA.  We have done this trip in years past and had fun on the hayride, picking pumpkins from the pumpkin patch, playing on the playground, and having a picnic lunch.  We'll be sure to take lots of pictures and post them here.  We are looking forward to a great day at the Y!

Week of September 13-17, 2010

We had a great week!  We went to Target for our CBI trip for this month.  Everyone was so well behaved that Ms. Gail took us for popcorn and Sprite in the Snack Shop.  Yum!  Thanks, Ms. Gail!!

Our unit this week was "Leaves Everywhere."   We learned all about the leaves and how they change in the fall.  We made leaf cookies and decorated a tree with beautiful and colorful leaves.

Since our swing s temporarily down, we have a new sensory activity, the "squeeze machine!"   Check it out in our slide show.  Even Ms. Stephanie gave it a try!

It's Spring!

FINALLY!  After a long, cold, snowy, rainy, yucky winter...

IT'S SPRING!

We did many activities during the month of March.  The highlight was our unit on Dr. Seuss.  His birthday is March 2nd, and we had fun reading his books all week!!  We ended the week with a Seussical Celebration!  We made "Cat in the Hat" hats and ate green eggs and ham.  It was fun.  Check it out!

We also did units on The Very Hungry Caterpillar, St. Patrick's Day, and the Easter Bunny.  Check out some of the artwork that is being sent home.

As for our CBI's.  We all had a great time at Pump It Up!  (Sorry no pictures, Bonnie forgot the camera :(  )   On April 22nd Pump It Up! is having a Jump for Autism event.  It is from 3-6.  More information will be coming.

In May we will be making a trip to Home Depot where we will play in the dirt and have more fun!

Well, we started the new year off with some winter stories.  Extremely appropriate since we had a snow day during our first week back to school!  During the month of January, we read The Gingerbread Man, The Mitten, and The Jacket I Wear in the Snow.  We love reading our winter stories.  We can stay cozy warm inside and just hear about the cold weather outside.

We also spent some time in the Science lab during January.  We learned about the water cycle.  We saw with our own eyes how water goes from a solid to a liquid and from a liquid to a gas and back to a liquid again.  We did an experiment on the water cycle in a plastic bag.  We actually saw it rain in the bag!  Be sure to check out the slide show of our experience on this site.  It was fun!
