The Dolphins are off to a super start! Below you can see some of the skills we have been learning.
Math
* place value to the 1,000
* standard form, expanded form and word form
* problem solving strategies
* building our math fluency with addition and subtraction facts (some students are already on multiplication!)
Writing
* generating ideas: narrowing down big ideas into small ideas
* revising details to make our details memorable
* editing for spelling, capitalization and punctuation
Reading
* reading "just right" books
* reading narratives and using a story map to help us with understanding the narratives we have read
* using strategies to understand what we read: this week's focus was determining the meaning of unknown words
Health
* Nutrition- reading nutritional labels to help determine the healthiest snack choice; September 21st, we will have a guest speaker from Well Star give us more information about nutrition.
Curious about next week? Check out our plan below.
Math
* extending number patterns
* building fluency with math facts
* problem solving strategies
* chapter 1 test
Writing
* Begin our study of the author, Roald Dahl- we will see how he came to be the writer he is by reading his Author's Notebook
* Read mentor texts to see the different ways and reasons to write letters- you may talk to your child about a family member or friend that they could start writing letters or emails to for a period of time
* write a letter to introduce ourselves to our book buddies
Spelling
We will begin to develop our "Words to Learn" section of our Word Study notebook. Our spelling lists will have pattern words from our Words Their Way books as well as words from our individual words to learn lists.
Reading
* using strategies to understand what we read: making predictions and making connections (text to self, text to text, text to world)
* reading fluency- students will be rereading books to build reading fluency. The standard for 3rd grade is 120 words a minute.
Social Studies
* Greek influences- the Olympics, architecture (columns) and government- We have an Olympic activity scheduled for Tuesday that requires some materials. If you would like to help us with getting these items, see the list below and send in a note or email so we know we can scratch that item off of our list.
Materials requested:
3-5 drinking straws
2 bags of marbles
3 meter tapes
cotton puff balls
a large sponge
large mixing bowl or bucket
Liter measuring set
2-3 paper plates or pie pans
For another project- empty toilet paper or paper towel rolls, Styrofoam fillings (used for packing), feathers used for crafts
Science
* The Wright Center will come to visit us to teach us about habitats this Wednesday.
