Weekly Update

MONEY, MONEY!!!!

 

Thank you all so much for the work you did to earn $154 for our class through Boosterthon donations. The children were very excited to see two new bean bags that were purchased with part of our money. The money also helped us to get a math DVD, games and materials to help us practice skills in a fun way during our math workshop time. 

 

This week's shout outs go to:

 

The top point earners for reading books and passing tests on BookAdventure.com-- Jada earned 380 points. Haleigh earned 235 points. Drew and Ivan tied with 200 points!

 

The students who did the most practice on IXL for decimals-- Thomas completed 87 problems. Noah completed 56 problems. Carmen completed 49 problems.

 

Students who showed mastery with 100% correct on Possessive Nouns-- Thomas, Dot and Leanne.

This weeks' skills:

 

Cursive: capital H, K; U, Y

 

Writing/ELA: homophones, using commas continued, organizational structure, adding -ing to words with vc and vcc patterns

 

Spelling: This week's spelling test will be on frequently used words for 3rd grade. Some students will have additional words if there are words written in the spelling section for next week. Students can practice spelling these words by going to spellingcity.com.

 

Reading: identifying cause and effect relationships continued, summarizing what we read

 

Math: Students will be tested on fractions and decimals, Tuesday. Wednesday, we will begin measurement.

 

Social Studies: We continue to learn about American Heroes through research and informational writing

 

Health: Continue research on specific illnesses and diseases in the computer lab- Studies have shown a close relationship between student achievement and high risk health behaviors. A health mind and body shows an increase in achievement.

 

 

Pajama Day/Crazy Hair Day Tomorrow!

Our class has earned many stickers for great behavior during lunch! We will celebrate tomorrow by having Pajama Day and Crazy Hair Day!

Weekly Update

Congratulations to the dolphins that have earned the honor of being a Cursive Coach. Coaches have consistently shown neat cursive handwriting and are great for other students to ask for help with cursive. Many students are close to earning the position. Way to go Ivan, Noah, and Megan! You are our first Cursive Coaches!

 

This weeks' skills:

 

Cursive: capital N and M

Math: Identifying and representing fractions as decimals, adding and subtracting fractions, problem solving with fractions

Students will be asked to practice fractions on ixl.com for homework Wednesday and Thursday. Please let me know you would prefer an alternative assignment on these days. It was great to see the practice that the dolphins did this past week on the website. It offered a great opportunity for the children to work on their level and have conferences with me to see how to solve the troublesome problems.

We enjoyed becoming reading coaches this week as we partnered up to read "just right" books work together to use strategies to figure out the meanings of unknown words. The sponges that Drew donated served as a great reminder for the reading coaches to be gentle and encouraging with their words.

 

The Wright Center visit was thrilling! Who would have guessed that we could hold animal skulls and feel real animal fur? Ask your child what animal skulls and fur were shared with us.

Cursive Letters – review and practice

WORD STUDY

- root words, prefixes (un-, re-, dis-, in-) and suffixes (-tion and
-ous)
Spelling Test will be Friday

WRITING

Narrative Writing- journaling and editing

READING

Using root words to determine word meanings, as well as the dictionary,
thesaurus, online resources and context clues
Summarizing- this week, students will begin to write a brief summary
about the 20 minutes of reading. The reading log is not required. The
summary should be 3 to 5 sentences. Each night's summary will be
written on the same paper for each week.

MATH

Begin our study of fractions
Review elapsed time and counting back change

SOCIAL STUDIES
