Georgia Department of Education Reading Standard for Fluency:
ELA2R2
The student demonstrates the ability to read orally with speed, accuracy, and expression. The student
a. Applies letter-sound knowledge to decode quickly and accurately.
b. Automatically recognizes additional high frequency and familiar words within texts.
c. Reads familiar text with expression.
d. Reads second-grade texts at a target rate of 90 words correct per minute.
e. Uses self-correction when subsequent reading indicates an earlier misreading within grade-level text.
Ways to help your child become an active reader:
-Students should read a minimum of 20-minutes per night.
-Students should be reading a “Just Right” book. This means that your child can read a page in the book, independently, with no more than five (5) errors.
-If the book appears too difficult, suggest a "Just Right Book" from your child's home library.
-As you listen to your child read aloud, listen for the following:
- Is your child reading smoothly, accurately, and with expression?
- Is she/he able to read common sight and high frequency words?
- Does she/he adjust and apply different reading rates to match the text?
- Does she/he use puctuation to enhance phrasing?
-If necessary, model correct phrasing and expression.
-The link at the top of this page is the “Read Aloud Checklist" which should be completed on Wednesday nights during "Timed Reading". Please send the signed checklist to school with your child on Thursday morning.
-On Wednesday nights time your child’s reading pace for one (1) minute. Enter the total words read on the top of the checklist.
-The goal is to monitor your child's progress so that she/he reaches GADOE's minimum of 90 words per minute.
-Remember, reading with a steady pace, expression, and accuracy makes a fluent reader.
***PLEASE note on the back of the checklist any observations or concerns you may have about your child’s read aloud that you would like addressed.
*** RETURN THE CHECKLIST EACH THURSDAY MORNING ***
